Introduction

Cycling Development North East is a group, formed by BC Go-Ride Clubs in the British Cycling North East Region, which aims to develop Youth (12-16) riders and encourage them to take part in all aspects of cycle sports competition. We also aim to support clubs and club officials in setting up races, coaches in developing their coaching practice with Youth riders and Go-Ride Schools in making wider contacts within cycle sport.

CDNE formed in 2010, during the initial program we have decided to run training sessions every Monday night, up until 13th December around the Youth Circuit racing on the Southbank circuit in Middlesbrough.  Due to the success of these sessions we will be moving to the new Prissick Cycle Park circuit.  For further information on the last few sessions of 2010 see HERE.

Developments for 2011

In 2011 we are looking to follow on from the initial success with a coach led racing series in the spring in which the riders will be given a chance to but their newly honed skills into practise and we will be using the both the Hetton Lyons and Prissick Cycle park closed road racing circuits.  We are currently planning these events and further information will be out soon.  This will initially be a road/circuit based series but mtb and cross will hopefully figure later in the year.

The CDNE Series of events will be launched in Spring 2011 with around 6 circuit events open to all Youth riders & Junior Women. The look and feel of the events will be something away from the norm and will allow riders to be grouped according to ability, rather than age. Each group has a CDNE club-based coach/mentor who themselves will receive support from Simon Watts, Jon Bateman, Alex McLean and other BC Talent Development Coaches. Each event is Entry on the Line to keep things nice and simple and entry fees have been kept to a minimum to encourage participation. If you are not a racing licence holder you may need to pay a small additional fee for a day licence to get British Cycling insurance cover, see our 'Rough Guide' for info on this and other aspects of getting started in Circuit Racing, such as gear restrictions and how a race day is structured.

Each event has a different set of races and the coaches assess the riders progression through the series, moving riders up or down the ability groups in order to develop their skills further.

Riders are encouraged to move on to compete in local, regional and eventually national youth events and CDNE aims to ease their entry into competition

Moving on from the spring series of events, there is a Youth Development Series based on regional circuits during 2011. There is also XC MTB events later in the year and we are open to suggestions for other events throughout the year and beyond. We want to develop CDNE to encompass other forms of cycle sport, particularly currently less represented disciplines in the region. Cross discipline coaching activities can be very beneficial for young riders and we aim to provide opportunities for this..
